House Dance Freestyle
EP. 07
I've been dancing my whole life and I've overcome stage fright, but showing my own movement and musicality? Somehow that feels like a completely different beast to tackle. And I feel like an imposter all the time, because I don't know how to freestyle.
I started taking house classes to get the foundations and musicality. But even in the most supportive environments, I can't quiet the negative self-talk. I know I just need to put myself out there. But my brain shuts everything down.
So instead of just, you know, going to the clubs like a normal human being.. I built an app!
Here's how it works: The app randomly displays three house dance moves, and the task is for my brain to build pathways to connect them. When you click shuffle, you get a new set of dance moves. I watched documentaries and YouTube videos to get the names of the dance moves and credit their origins where I could find them. And as I learn a new move, I can add it to the mix.
I created the mockups in Canva. I pulled a lot of inspiration from the original Chicago warehouse flyers, built the app in Cursor, and deployed on Railway.
Now,I know the whole point of house dance is community and it's the most supportive community ever. But when my own negative self talk is the loudest voice in the room, I need to fix that first. So with this app, my brain is re-wiring the negative self talk into new movement pathways. And that's the trade-off of tiny apps.
Dancers, let me know what you think. Can you relate and want to check out the demo? Or are you just like girl, stfu and let's go to the clubs.
